Doggie Castaway Lands on Nova Scotia |

January 13, 2001 After a chilly, five day cruise on an ice floe, Scooter the American fox hound arrived safely at Lismore, Nova Scotia, having inadvertently embarked from Prince Edward Island. The two-year-old dog had been chasing a coyote on the ice near Big Point, Prince Edward Island when owner Jeremy Millar lost sight of her in a snow storm that ultimately carried her out to sea. Although Scooter was wearing a transmitter around her neck at the time, efforts to track her were unsuccessful, and Millar was forced to abandon the rescue. Days later Rick Kehoe, a construction worker at Lismore, spotted Scooter and ran to ice floe to save her. Said Mr. Kehoe, "She was running back and forth on the ice. I had to go out on the ice for her." |
Scooter's incredible journey had carried her 70 km across the Northumberland Strait. The tides had most probably been pushing her back and forth between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia for days. The identification tag on her collar made it possible for Mr. Kehoe to contact Mr. Millar, who was soon happily reunited with his hound. Related articles: §§§
