Dog Survives Dive Off Sunshine Skyway Bridge

February 15, 2001 St. Petersburg, FL, USA

Apparently, no one ever told Maggie May that dogs can't fly.  On Tuesday morning, the 87 lb. boxer/terrier found out for herself.

Maggie May was riding in a car northbound over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge when a minor fender bender occurred, throwing her from the vehicle.  In a state of panic, the dog jumped over the bridge railing and plunged some 50 ft. down into the bay below.

Kenny Hyatt, a fisherman, happened to be in the right place at the right time.  He rushed to the rescue and was able to pull Maggie May from the waters.

Said Mr. Hyatt, "I saw the dog swimming around in a circle.  She would have been toast."  As it were, the acrobatic pooch only suffered a few cuts.

Minutes later, she was happily reunited with her owners Kathy and Dennis Blakely.  They said from now on Maggie May will be strapped in the car with a special doggie seat belt.
