'Terrorists' Raid Research Lab to Free Dogs

April 3, 2001
East Millstone, New Jersey, USA

A massive animal rescue operation took place at Huntingdon Labs in New Jersey.  As many as 14 dogs were freed from their experimental cages when a group of individuals broke into the compound early Sunday morning.

The president of the Foundation for Biomedical Research has accused the Animal Liberation Front of burglary and theft, also stating, "Unless the general public firmly rejects this criminal malfeasance and the hooligan perpetrators behind it, all medical and scientific progress is at risk."

Defending the use of dogs and other animals in biomedical experimentation, he said, "According to the USDA, the vast majority of biomedical testing does not cause significant pain or distress. And when animals are euthanized, it is done in the most humane way possible, with a lethal injection."

Often called "a terrorist group", The Animal Liberation Front is "an underground group of people who break the law in order to rescue animals from abusive situations" (quoted from the Animal Defense League, who supports the A.L.F.).

"The Animal Liberation Front consists of small autonomous groups of people all over the world who carry out direct action according to the A.L.F. guidelines. The guidelines are explicit - An ALF action must liberate animals, cause economic damage to abusive industries, or reveal the atrocities of animal abuse. The members must take all precautions not to injure human or non-human animals."
