Lost by a Yap: Jailbreak Foiled by 10-Month-Old Puppy

Friday, July 6, 2001 - BRAZIL

"Heartbeats they were racin',
Freedom they was chasin',
Spotlights, sirens, rifles firing,
[and puppy dog's mouth a-biting]"

Jailbreak, 70's metal band AC/DC

(Hmm, somehow I think that last line I added ruins the iambic pentameter of the song; I should really stick to dogs.)

RIO DE JANERO — Thanks to none other than a floppy-eared mutt, 180 armed prisoners are back where they belong this morning.  ABC News reports that a mass prison escape at Rio de Janero prison was thwarted by a stray dog when the dog alerted guards by barking.

Prison guards had adopted the wandering puppy several months ago, naming him "Pam" and allowing him to sleep inside the prison as their unofficial mascot.  "I guess he earned his keep," said a prison spokesperson on Wednesday.

"Why would anyone want to break out of here?  The food is excellent, and you get to chew on anything you want." (Photo: Corbis)

Shortly before dawn on Tuesday, July 3, a conspiracy of convicts assembled, intending to scale the prison wall, prison authorities said.  Despite the escapees' crafty maneuvers which were too stealthy for human senses, the mongrel pup was able to detect the insurrection and launched into his own mini version of an air-raid siren.

The prison spokesperson describes, "Guards ran up to the towers to see what was happening.  The prisoners were armed and had tied bedsheets together to try and get out."

A shootout ensued, in which one prisoner was killed, seven prisoners wounded, one prison guard wounded and one puppy injured.

"Pam is going to be fine—we are paying for a private veterinarian so he can get special care," noted the spokesperson.

On the other side, I'm sure more than one re-prisoner is muttering the famous sotto voce we remember from the end of each Scooby-Doo episode:

"...And we would've gotten away, if it weren't for that meddling mutt!"

Somebody give that dog two Scooby Snacks.
