Who's the Ugliest Dog in the World? |

From the American Kennel Club: "Each animal in competition is compared with the judge's mental image of the perfect dog described in the standard. ...Splayed feet, hare feet, knuckling over, or feet turning in or out are serious faults. ...Woolly coats, soft silky coats, and sparse slick coats are not typical of the breed, and should be severely penalized." BONITA SPRINGS, FL — What's an ugly dog to do when faced with these stringent ordinances? Give up show biz? No way, pal. More and more these days, dog shows are straying away from the age-old tradition of judging a dog by its conformation to the textbook-perfect look. As a matter of fact, you can catch one such show tomorrow, August 12, 2001 at the Flamingo Island Flea Market, 11902 Bonita Beach Road (west of Interstate 75, Exit 18, Bonita Springs). The Flamingo Island Flea Market along with sponsor Paws, Claws & Tails are hosting the Second Annual Ugly Dog Contest which—uncomplimentary title notwithstanding—is intended to showcase and honor the charismatically-challenged canines of the world. This prestigious event will be judged by Mayor Paul Pass and Bonita City Councilman Ben Nelson. The creator of the contest, Flea Market general manager Gene Vaccaro, is quick to emphasize that it's all in the name of fun, and that the competition is entirely tongue-in-cheek (although it's not easy keeping some of these oversized canine tongues in their places. See exhibit A: "Scruffy", above) . There's no stress involved, and no lofty expectations are imposed on the dogs, other than to simply look their worst.

Who's allowed to compete? Everyone, even purebred dogs. Contestants may register in advance or simple show up tomorrow with a leash. Contest entries are free-of-charge, and each competitor will take home a gift certificate from Paws, Claws and Tails. Says PC & T owner Charleen Lyons, "We said, 'This has got to be great. Usually the ugliest dogs are usually the cutest.' " §§§
