NOVI, MI (USA) — Early Tuesday morning, a
fire broke out in the residential area of Oregon Avenue, destroying the
home of the Kovac family. But while virtually all of the family's
possessions were lost in the blaze, there were no casualties thanks to a
pair of fast-acting heroes: a woman and a dog.
According to The Oakland
Press, the authorities credit neighbor Barb d'Hondt with rushing into the
burning house and saving the life of 5-year-old Mitchell Kovac, while
the Kovac's German Shepherd "Bosworth" saved the family cat by
grabbing her and dragging her outside (although the cat keeps insisting
it was she who dragged Bosworth out by the mouth).
"Everyone did exactly what they
were supposed to do—even the dog," says Barb Kovac who was not at
home when the fire began. She had left to take her husband Rod to
work at about 6:00 that morning. The two boys, Nicholas, 12, and
Mitchell, 5, were home alone when a faulty dryer caught fire, causing
flames to spread rapidly through the house.
Nicholas was the first to notice
smoke. He managed to climb out a window and run across the street
where he alerted Ms. d'Hondt to the situation. She rushed back
across the street and into the burning house to save Mitchell. At
about the same time, Bosworth smashed through a window and brought the
cat to safety.

"He went back in and tried to grab
the bird cage," adds Ms. Kovac.
Even after all of the occupants—human,
canine, feline and avian—were safely evacuated, Ms. Kovac had to
restrain Bosworth from going back into the blaze. (He must've been going
back for the rats.)
She explains: "I kept petting him,
saying 'the babies are safe.' "
Novi Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Johnson
said that there were a lot of heroes. They plan on honoring the
rescuers at the next City Council meeting on Oct. 15.

"The chocolate-chip cookies!
I've got to go back and save the chocolate-chip cookies!"
